Nasal (spray)

In Russia, Selank and Semax are approved as nasal sprays. For Selank, the dosage is 250 to 500 micrograms per application; for Semax, it is 250 to 600 micrograms per application. Both are used two to three times a day. Gray-market powder vials are mixed with BAC water (water with a preservative) to match the concentration of the Russian original. However, there are no official dosing instructions for these gray-market products, and the duration of use is not specified.

From powder to a finished nasal spray

The powder is mixed here too, but the solution then goes into a spray bottle instead of a syringe. The guide shows how to work out the amount per spray and every step up to the finished bottle.

What are Selank and Semax?

Selank and Semax are two synthetic heptapeptides, each made of seven amino acids, developed at the Moscow Institute of Molecular Genetics. In Russia, both substances are officially approved as nasal sprays, while in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland they are not approved as medicines and are legally considered research chemicals.

When comparing these two nootropic peptides, despite their structural similarity, they show opposite effect profiles: Semax boosts mental alertness, concentration, and cognitive focus, while Selank is specifically used for stress reduction and anxiety relief. For detailed individual analyses of their biochemical profiles and dosing, check out the guides on Selank and Semax.

How are Selank and Semax used?

Selank and Semax are administered exclusively through the nasal mucosa as a nasal spray or nasal drops. This intranasal route is the only evidence-based method of administration: both the Russian approval documents and all clinical human studies are based on nasal use, while subcutaneous or intramuscular injections have neither been reviewed by authorities nor supported by studies.

The official Russian prescribing information lists the following dosing schedules for both peptide preparations:

SubstanceConcentrationDose per useFrequency
Selank0.15% nasal250-500 mcg2-3x daily
Semax0.1% nasal250-600 mcg2-3x daily

On the gray market, Selank and Semax are usually available as freeze-dried powder (lyophilisate) in vials that must be dissolved before use. Users mix this peptide powder with BAC water (bacteriostatic water) and transfer the finished solution into nasal spray bottles. Since no standardized protocols exist for this form of self-preparation, purity and dosing accuracy vary significantly depending on the source.

How do reconstitution and dosing work for Selank and Semax?

When mixing peptide vials from the gray market (usually containing 5 mg or 10 mg of active substance), the powder is turned into a ready-to-use nasal solution. The following example calculation illustrates the mathematical reconstitution based on the original Russian concentrations, but it is not a medical dosing recommendation.

Selank 0.15% (1.5 mg/ml)

  • 5mg vial: 5mg powder + 3.33ml BAC water = 1,500 mcg/ml (0.15%)
  • 10mg vial: 10mg powder + 6.67ml BAC water = 1,500 mcg/ml (0.15%)
  • With a nasal spray bottle delivering 0.1ml per spray: 150 mcg per spray
  • For 250-500 mcg: about 2-3 sprays per use

Semax 0.1% (1.0 mg/ml)

  • 5mg vial: 5mg powder + 5ml BAC water = 1,000 mcg/ml (0.1%)
  • 10mg vial: 10mg powder + 10ml BAC water = 1,000 mcg/ml (0.1%)
  • With a nasal spray bottle delivering 0.1ml per spray: 100 mcg per spray
  • For 250-600 mcg: about 2.5-6 sprays per use

Note: The actual amount of active substance per spray depends on the output volume of your nasal spray bottle - always check the milliliter amount per spray. This model calculation describes an experimental user practice based on the Russian approval values. For detailed step-by-step instructions on mixing and storing peptides, see the Guides section.

Selank vs. Semax: What are the differences between the two peptides?

Selank and Semax are both Russian heptapeptides for nasal use, but they are based on different peptide precursors and have distinct neurobiological mechanisms of action. The direct comparison below summarizes the key differences:

PropertySelankSemax
Main effectAnxiolytic, calmingCognition-enhancing, focusing
Structural basisTuftsin (immune substance)ACTH (stress hormone)
Mechanism of actionGABA system, enkephalin inhibitionMelanocortin system, BDNF activation
Indication (RU)Generalized anxiety disorder, neurastheniaCognitive disorders, stroke rehabilitation
Approval0.15% nasal spray0.1% and 1% nasal drops
Direction of effectRelaxation without fatigueAlertness, mental clarity

Both peptides increase the expression of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) in the hippocampus, a central growth factor for synaptic plasticity and nerve regeneration. Through this shared neuroprotective signaling pathway, both substances support neuronal learning and adaptation processes [1, 8].

Selank primarily modulates the GABA system, the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter for neuronal damping and relaxation in the central nervous system. This makes Selank anxiolytic (anxiety-relieving) without causing drowsiness. Additionally, Selank slows the breakdown of the body's own enkephalins by inhibiting degrading enkephalinases [5].

Semax acts on the melanocortin system and modulates neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory signaling cascades as well as cellular energy metabolism. Through a accompanying rise in the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, Semax selectively promotes vigilance, concentration, and mental endurance.

When is which substance suitable: Selank or Semax?

The choice between Selank and Semax depends on your individual goal and neurocognitive needs:

  • For stress, anxiety, or inner restlessness: Selank is primarily suitable for calming and emotional stabilization, as it works anxiolytically without making you sleepy like classic sedatives.
  • For poor concentration, brain fog, or mental exhaustion: Semax is the better choice for boosting alertness, memory, and mental clarity.
  • For neurological rehabilitation: In Russia, Semax is also used in neurological rehabilitation.

For more in-depth information on efficacy, studies, and dosing, see the individual pages on Selank and Semax. For a comprehensive comparison of other nootropic substances, check out the Peptide Library.

Can you combine Selank and Semax?

There are no controlled clinical studies or safety data on the combined use (stacking) of Selank and Semax. In nootropic communities, both heptapeptides are occasionally combined at different times, with Semax used in the morning for focus and mental performance and Selank in the evening for stress relief.

If you administer both peptides in parallel, you should separate the doses in time and never apply both nasal sprays into the same nostril at the same time. This combined use is based solely on anecdotal user reports without scientific backing.

In Russia, Selank (under the brand name Selanc) and Semax are approved medicines. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, both heptapeptides have no pharmaceutical approval.

In Europe, they are sold almost exclusively as research chemicals not intended for human consumption. When buying online, it is advisable to carefully check the supplier; practical criteria can be found in the guide on protection when ordering.

The scientific evidence corresponds to evidence level 3: both active substances rely almost entirely on Russian market data and human studies. Methodologically independent, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials from Western research centers are not yet available [1, 3, 8].

Evidence at a glance

Research status
Selank and Semax are officially approved as nasal sprays in Russia. Selank is available there in a concentration of 0.15% (brand name Selanc), while Semax comes in strengths of 0.1% and 1%. The clinical evidence is mainly based on Russian human studies; independent Western studies are not available yet. A functional connectome study from 2020 compared how both substances affect brain networks [8]. For more details on effects and dosage, check the individual entries for Selank and Semax.
Human evidence
Selank and Semax are peptides currently being studied in Russian human trials. Selank is being researched for generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, a condition of chronic fatigue and irritability [1, 3]. Semax is being studied for cognitive uses and stroke rehabilitation. A 2020 study looked at how both peptides affect functional connectivity in the brain [8]. Another study from 2021 examined how Selank influences cytokine levels, which are signaling molecules in the immune system, under social stress [9]. Since independent Western studies are still lacking, the significance of these findings is limited. Details are in the individual entries.
Dosages in studies & practice
In the Russian approval, these dosages are listed: Selank is available as a 0.15% nasal spray. You use about 250 to 500 mcg per application, two to three times a day [1, 3]. Semax is approved as a 0.1% nasal spray. Here, it's about 250 to 600 mcg per application, also two to three times a day. On the gray market, 5mg or 10mg vials are typically sold as lyophilized powder. To reach the Russian approved concentration, a 5mg vial of Selank is reconstituted with 3.33ml of BAC water (0.15%), and a 5mg vial of Semax with 5ml of BAC water (0.1%). This gray market practice is unsubstantiated.
Risks & side effects
In Russian studies, the side effects are described as minor. The most common ones are local reactions, such as nasal irritation. Independent safety studies and long-term data are still missing, so the evidence on long-term safety remains limited. There is also no safety data on combining the two peptides. You can find more detailed information in the individual entries.
Research gaps
So far, no independent Western studies in humans have looked at these peptides. There are also no specific studies on combining the two active ingredients, and reliable long-term data are missing. The Russian connectome study from 2020 [8] offers a first scientific starting point for comparing how they work at the network level.
