It has been studied since the 1970s and is often touted as a miracle anti-aging remedy in the biohacking scene. While its biochemical effects are well-documented, long-term clinical evidence in humans for profound skin rejuvenation is lacking.

At its core, GHK-Cu consists of three linked amino acids (glycine, histidine, and lysine) that together bind a copper ion - hence the name. In the lower layer of the skin (the dermis), the complex sends signals that kickstart skin repair and remodeling. Media and influencers often praise the substance as an absolute fountain of youth. A critical look, however, shows that the vast majority of reported successes are based on cell cultures and animal studies, while comprehensive data from living humans is scarce. How is GHK-Cu used?

GHK-Cu is used in two fundamentally different ways - and this difference is crucial for its effectiveness, safety, and legality.

Topically (on the skin) is the primary, evidence-backed, and legally recognized route of application. How does GHK-Cu work?

How effective is GHK-Cu?

Applying GHK-Cu to the skin is the only route that has solid evidence behind it: creams and serums with 0.05 to 3% GHK-Cu, used once or twice a day [1, 2]. Risks & side effects
So far, no Phase III studies have looked at the safety and side effects of GHK-Cu, and reporting of adverse events is voluntary [4]. The "long history of safe use" in wound healing and skin care mentioned in the scientific literature [6] refers only to applying the substance to the skin.
